New equipment for Lochcarron Shinty Club

·      Young Highland shinty players to get new sticks and safety helmets

Lochcarron Shinty Club (Lochcarron Camanachd) has been awarded £500 from Heart of the Community Trust which will enable them to purchase shinty sticks and helmets to encourage children to become involved in the sport.

Currently 45 youth members attend the club on a weekly basis and the cash will allow sessions to encourage further children to become involved.  Founded in 1883, Lochcarron Camanachd is one of the oldest shinty clubs in the west Highlands.

George Hendry, Chieftan, Lochcarron Shinty Club, said:”The club has a reputation for its youth development and represents shinty in sportscotland’s national youth sports programme.  We actively support shinty at both Plockton High School and Lochcarron Primary School and are involved with the recently formed Ross & Sutherland Shinty Development Association.  Equipment is vital to both safety and fun and this grant from Scottish Sea Farms could not have come at a better time.”

Will Fulton, Site Manager, Scottish Sea Farms, said: “Active participation in sport should be encouraged at all ages.  These youngsters are having a great time keeping fit and healthy.  Shinty is a terrific sport and we were delighted that our Heart of The Community Fund could help out.”

Application forms for the Heart of The Community can be found on the Scottish Sea Farms website – www.scottishseafarms.com – together with full details of the criteria required.
